Responsible Business Policy

1. Mission Statement.


Hotels by their very nature are large consumers of resources; they operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week with little “down” time where power consumption can be reduced.

We need to be aware of the effect our business has on the environment and continually look for ways where we can reduce or mitigate against the effect of our carbon footprint.

All our staff are made aware of our commitment to reducing our power consumption and their
responsibilities towards achieving the aims of the business.

We will commit business resources to energy management, reduce our energy costs. We will look for ways we can reduces environmental impact, minimise CO2 emissions, consider life-cycle energy costs for all new projects and where possible use energy from renewable sources.

2. Statement of Commitment.


1. We are committed to:

Purchasing energy at the most cost effective price. We have a broker who helps us achieve this by constantly monitoring market supply.
Looking for ways that we can purchase some of our energy from renewable sources
Increasing energy efficiency in terms of energy consumed per Degree Day [space heating]Reducing co2 emissions.

Investing in new technology where this meets investment criteria

• 2.1.1 Power Protectors to reduce input voltage

(these initiatives will be instigated on our next refurbishment program)

• 2.1.2 Key cards with built in light switches and movement sensors
• 2.1.3 Key cards with room heating sensors
• 2.1.4 Ambient room temperatures
• 2.1.5 Solar panels on the annex roofs to provide all annex hot water
• Entering into a climate-change agreement via our trade association – The GTBS.
• We are committed to our re-cycling policy and monitoring of waste by category so reducing still
further the amount we send to landfill

2. We will address Energy Efficiency in all areas of our

1. Management Issues.

Define roles and responsibilities for energy
Educate and raise awareness among staff
Establish clear reporting procedures
Form an Environmental and Social work group [Green Team]

2. Procurement Issues


Procure new equipment with low energy ratings
Continue with the installation of low energy [28 to 35 volt] LED lighting
Consider life-cycle energy costs for new projects and refurbishment.
We will consider life-cycle energy costs for existing plant with a view to modify.
We shall endeavor to purchase products that have a reduced environmental impact and
from suppliers who demonstrate environmental and social responsibility

3. Financial Issues

  • Establish ownership of energy costs at departmental level
  • Establish ownership of invoice verification
  • Set and publish performance improvement targets
  • Reduce energy consumption by 30% over 3 years
  • Reduce environmental impact by reducing our emissions of 80 tonnes of co2 or 40% within 3 years [this includes waste re-cycling]
  • Reduce energy consumption to a good level benchmark
  • Seek competitive tenders for Gas and Electricity supplies
  • Identify all cost effective energy efficiency measures
  • We encourage our guests to help us with our environmental initiatives through in room policy cards.

    We recycle Plastic, Paper, Card, Glass, Batteries, Light Bulbs, Ink Cartridges,
    We recycle our Food Waste
    We Operate a preventative maintenance programme
    We regular check water flow rates to ensure no overuse
    We record and monitor our Gas, Electric and Water consumption
    We actively support local charities and our a Friend of Broomfield NHS Trust
    We a hold A GTBS Silver Award for our environmental efforts
    We take an active role in our local community and contribute to them
    We have joined the Suffolk County Council Energy Club as part of their EU initiative
    Some senior staff have become mentors and buddies of students at the local college.
    We will encourage guests and staff alike to be aware of their impact on the environment and help us reduce our carbon footprint.
