Heavy Horse Experience for under 16's

This exciting course is run by Claudia Waller, a partner of Hawthorn Heavy Horses based at Hylands. She specialises in the use of working horses for forestry and conservation work. Claudia has a BSc in Equine Studies and 12 years’ experience of working heavy horses.

Horse Logging Experience Day

Come and experience the magic and tranquillity of a woodland setting with one of our rare breed horses. The day will include a logging demonstration in the woods then having a go at it yourselves. You will experience what a horse loggers day in the woods involves including tea breaks and lunch in the great outdoors. Meet at the Stables Visitor Centre.

 

Participants: Please download and complete the welfare form and information sheet on the right. All participants must bring the welfare form with them on the morning of their experience day

Advice for general park users during Christmas Fair at Hylands House

Hylands House Christmas Fair will take place on 6 and 7 December from 11am until 7pm both days. It is anticipated that there will be a lot of traffic coming to the Festival.

 

Event traffic will be encouraged to park in the event car park using Webbs Farm entrance (following the AA signage) and also the Writtle Park entrance. The London Road entrance to Hylands House will be closed to all users during the event.

 

For general park users and dog walkers, the Widford Church entrance will be open across the weekend - normal park opening and closing times apply.

Cross Country at Hylands

Approximately 200 runners are due to attend a Cross Country at Hylands on Sunday 30 November 2014. Please expect a higher volume of traffic that usual in the Writtle car park

Copper Clay

Working with pure copper clay you will learn how to manipulate and form the clay. Create different designs and textures to make unique pieces of jewellery. You will see how the copper is fired in the kiln and learn the polishing techniques used to finish your pieces. This workshop allows you to make either one large piece or a number of smaller pieces.


This workshop is suitable for beginners or intermediate crafters.

Applique/Embellished Bunting

This is a fun workshop and, although you will be given a materials list, Lynne Sharpe will have a trove of extra bits and pieces you can delve into.

Introduction to Basic Batik

Batik is a term used to describe the very old skill of using dyes and hot wax as a resist on paper or cloth to produce beautiful patterns and designs. It has been used in Indonesia, Africa, India and Japan. The wax is applied with a brush or a ‘janting’ (a special tool that holds hot wax, and enables us to draw or make marks with the wax). Successive layers of colour are used to build up the design producing exciting and original work.

Tuesday Toddle

The Tuesday Toddle sessions are run approximately every month throughout the year, with a break during the school summer holiday period. The Toddles are an opportunity for parents with pre-school children to enjoy a guided walk in the park and garden areas surrounding Hylands House along with other parents with children of a similar age. The routes chosen for the walk on the whole take into account those with pushchairs although a short detour maybe necessary from time to time to avoid steps etc. Maximum of three children per adult.

Heavy Horse Experience Day - Driving

The perfect gift or personal experience. Enjoy a day working with one of our rare breed heavy horses including grooming, harness care and an introduction to coach driving techniques with the opportunity to take the reins yourself. This is an exclusive day with only 4 people, maximum, booked on.

Glass Jewellery

This one-day jewellery workshop gives you the opportunity to explore the various techniques and materials used to produce stunning glass jewellery. Resident glass artist, Mona Marnell, will
take you through the designing, making and finishing process. The day will also include an understanding of working with kiln-fired glass. You will use the materials provided to create glimmering silver and glass drop earrings. Once fired your pieces will be ready for collection
from the studio to keep or give away.

Beginners Enamelling: Wire & Cloisonne Effect

In this workshop, Toni Peers will show you how to use wire to aid in enamelling designs. There are all sorts of ways to do this, each creating a different effect. You will also create filled enamelling cells or cloisonné to add decoration to your pieces. Expect to produce up to three
